It's been quite a long time since our last first 10 minutes, and since a story heavy game like Heavenly Sword is most appropriate for these videos I bought the game on saturday. 2 more videos will follow during the week, along with my impressions.
Update: Second part is online, with a lot of not so precise Sixaxis gameplay.
Update3: Third and last part available.

Granted, just because a game gets some 7's doesn't mean it's a "flop" per say. However, when it has such high production values and is the oft mentioned reason people would purchase the platform the game is on, such average review scores certainly nudge it a little closer to the flop end of the spectrum.

Optimus, I don't think you understand the art of a flop.
If a game does not score a 9, it doesn't make it a flop, but if the hype was for that of a AAA game, and the game does not score that, then yes, it is a flop.
Word definition:
Flop--a game that fails to meet the general public's expectations.
The Mass Effect example is a really bad one. That fool doing a PREVIEW said things that we have found not to be true. Or do we need anything other than the video showing the conversation between shepard and wrex to counter the claim?
And once again, it's a preview. And yes, if Mass Effect does not score a 9 or more it'll be considered a flop I'd say. That game has gotten so much hype it's not even funny. And that's not just from on site, it would have to be some sort of average from the most respected sites/mags.
What IGN is telling us about HS's gameplay is something we can't counter because we haven't played it to the extent they have. How do you know the combat does not get boring/repetitive? How do you know how annoying the ranged combat can get? Why should they lie about the game's lenght?
Sure, it's one review only, but it's not the score only, it's what was said about it. To you, it might be too early to call it a flop, but to me, what was said about it will not get it much higher in scale with any other slightly respected review site/mag.

I will give you this, Lebato, I do agree with your definition of flop. A 1st party title with a huge budget and marketing campaign that doesn't break the 8.5 barrier in average, doesn't sell well, and/or doesn't have a really, really compelling gameplay design/mechanic is a flop. It doesn't make it a bad game--it just means it undelivered.

The fans have spoken. Concerning the graphics of the Halo 3 Beta: "There's so many little effects and things going on that make this game pretty much 2nd only to Gears at the moment."

Now i'm not saying that IGN/GS/EDGE ect.. are going to love it, but at least they are
official gaming sites and know what there talking about most of time, to use this Destructiod site in your example bears no weight.
I've never heard of this guy Orcist before, his preview is obviously satirical but not very informative. He's seems more interested in delivering his punchlines than actually telling us about the game.
Nothing about character creation, nothing about loading times or any of things that more respected game sites make a point of expounding upon. He just lampoons the game with a lazy approach to details.
"The gameplay looks like your standard FPS fare"
I finished the article but that pretty much did it for me.

Not many so I expect Blue Dragon to be dragged through the pervibial mud when it comes to reviews. I'll read what gamespot had to say (even if I totally disagree), but IGN, 1up, Edge I could care less what they have to say. I've all seen them give reviews which I'd classify as EXTREMELY suspect or questionable. Not everyone respects those sites I can't point out many occassions where 1up, IGN AND edge were wrong about a game. Gamespot is usually the best at fair reviews from what I've seen, but even they aren't perfect.
Heavenly Sword is more their style of game, but even so I'm sure even that is feeling the after effects of reviewers drooling over Bioshock and giving other games not like it crap.

And people aren't giving BD and Heavenly Sword lower scores because there's a great game shipping this month. Totally unrelated.. it is what it is. And you're not expected to agree with every review, but to expect every reviewer to like what he's playing is to discredit critical writing all together.
Of course, that still doesn't give anyone the right to troll a review thread with idiotic "I told you so!" comments either. And you don't have to respect critical writing, but being so critical of it is sorta strange if you ask me. Out of all of those publications mentioned, the only one I take particular issue with is 1up (and EGM) because the text (which is the most important part of a review, not the arbitrary scoring) is short and without much in the way of detail.
The whole idea of hating on a publication for hating a game you're anticipating is backwards though.. they have every write to be critical of any game.. since that is the nature of their job.

Ops no one is trying to change your mind here, but i for one will rent or borrow this title now (when i get a ps3 ;p) and not spend £50 of my hard earnt money on something were one of my only real worries about this title seems to be true, and it seems i shall finish it in a day and have no reason to play again, so for me and me only its a borrow of a friend.

1up's BD review seemed like messageboard fan service. They were going for as many zingers as they could similar to destructoids Mass Effect preview. Funny enough though I don't think it'll really have any major impact on the sale of the game.
Only the people that didn't intend to get it in the first place will be swayed and essentially its now back to the way it was when the game was first announced and nobody saw its TGS showing. Only the hardcore of the hardcore (for that type of game) will want it. I thinkif anything it succeeds by being different from anything else on the 360. That way its pretty much assured the ones that buy the game is likely to be the sign of a different type of audience within the 360 fanbase. Heavenly Sword I'm going to check it out for myself personally only had a few complaints about the demo.

I'm still buying Heavenly Sword regardless, having been in the fortunate position to have played a build already, I'm quite content with what I've seen to shell out for it, even if it is short and I end up trading it in for something else.
I spent £330 on a damn PS3 for the game, least I can do is play through it!
It does sound to me however, that the shooting/guiding projectiles mechanic is massively overdone. I didn't tire of it after 20 mins or so but if the game, already said to be short, is effectively shorter and padded out with too much of it then that is a big legitimate complaint and quite bad given 4 years and the budget laid out for this title.
A shame as the core gameplay is golden.
